<update> I just reported 83 miscats out of 98 from the past month of
Visual Suggestions submitted. It saddens me that much of it has already been there for a month and nobody's moved it yet. Shouldn't dA take more care of the Suggestions gallery? I'd sign up for GM of it at any time, even though I don't know much about the backbone of how dA works. At least I know that anime and photos does not belong in that gallery.
Reporting miscats on dA is in the spirit of the Wikinomics book. It's all about collaboration, of collectively making the internet what we want it to be. Keeping the art on dA well sorted is just as collaborative as correcting typos and grammar mistakes on Wikipedia.
</update>Been playing
MapleStory with
Roze for the past two-three weeks. While the game is lacking in many areas, it is nice to get to obsess about something again. I am currently in the process of getting to know my way around the fan-made
MapleWiki and I am trying to contribute as much as possible. Being a grammar nazi, it's quite easy to help this wiki out, seeing as there are few contributing members and tons of badly formatted articles. The facts are most often correct, they are just not very pleasant to read. As crazy as it seems, it's also nice to mindlessly grind monsters. The pixel art of the game (it's only displayed in 800x600) is also quite inspiring, and you might see more pixel art from me this summer.
In other news, I assume summer has hit you as well, provided you live on the northern hemisphere. Seems to me everyone is complaining about the wonderful heat. Sure, we are all melting away, but considering the alternative I am tremendously happy the way things are now.
Last week, me and Roze had a walk through town after work. It was a Friday afternoon, 6 pm, and the summer weather had just recently hit us so it was still quite comfortable. The trams were absolutely packed, so instead of getting on we decided to walk. It was nice to just have a slow and aimless walk, talking about various things. When we found ourselves outside the city library I decided to head in and see if I could find an interesting book. I started off at the technology shelves, figured I'd learn more about PHP or MySQL or anything that caught my interest, but I changed my mind and headed to the business shelves and ended up with a copy of
Wikinomics by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams.
I've only read a quarter of the book this far, but I must say it's really inspiring. I'm regaining my hope for the world, seeing it described in this way. I felt like I was one of the lost and forgotten digital children, like most of us here, that we were not taken seriously by the older generations and that we would end up broke and in misery due to our naive ideals. This book takes our naive ideals and explains how it is the world around that has to change, not the other way. And it can be done, I'm sure of it. If we just stick to our ideals of an open, free, friendly world, it can happen. It's not impossible anymore.
The only issue with the book is that it is clearly written for a different audience than myself, and I don't understand much of the wallstreet vocabulary and business talk. Oh well, I'll learn.
Lunch now. If you know of any other inspiring books about either technology, linguistics or the internet (the net generation), feel free to share. I'm in a mood for thinking and learning.
- Unseen talent: James is a new deviant, he joined only a month ago and doesn't even have 200 pageviews yet. He's got some brilliant acrylics paintings and digital tablet paintings. I can definitely see this deviant grow to be a very appreciated artist.
